Project Reflection

The final product I created for our exhibition is a Trifold board with articles and pictures on Recycled Clothing and Global Warming. I'm very proud of it, because we put a lot of work into it, and I think people will definitely be able to see that when they look at our board. Basically, this is the process we went through for our Tri-Fold: Went to the Birch Aquarium to look at the Global Warming Exhibit (that really made us more aware of a lot of the things it's doing, and just expanded our knowledge), Buy the Trifold, Research a lot about Recycled Clothing, Print out pictures and articles, glue all the pictures and articles on the board, Go to Buffalo Exchange, Goodwill and JC Penney, write a paragraph about going to the stores, finish trifold. I learned a lot about Global Warming from the Birch Aquarium exhibit, and I learned so much about Recycled Clothing from articles on the internet. A challenge I faced while creating the display was that I was absent for 2 days, so a lot of the information they'd been learning about, I didn't know. But Emma & Ms. Staff told me about the information, so I was fine. After these two weeks, I think Sustainability is Learning how to reuse your old things (such as clothes maybe?) and not have to depend on buying new items all the time, just being very resourceful. And that ties into being an environmental steward, because I think that that is just being really responsible with using resources, just picking up trash (even if it isn't yours), and not using too much non-renewable energy things. Trying to help the earth.

Termites

1. What is biomimicry? Biomimicry is the Imitation of Life.

2. Why are termites a great subject for biomimicry research? Termites are a great subject for biomimicry research because they break down microorganisms into ethanol, which can be used as fuel. We're trying to do that, so we're learning from them.

3. What is an enzyme? An enzyme is a type of catalyst. What is a catalyst? Something that speeds up the process of something.

4. What is cellulosic material? The leftover material of plants that we don't eat, and is usually wasted.

5. Why would cellulosic ethanol be more sustainable and efficient than biofuels using corn or sugar cane? Because we eat corn and sugar cane, and we need that, plus we waste a lot of the corn and sugar cane, and don't use the parts that we don't eat. But ceullulosic ethanol is extra anyway so we wouldn't be wasting anything.

Blog 2

1. sustainability: Sustainability is reusing things, using them again and again in kind of a cycle.
2. freegans: Freegans are people who live off dumpsters, and are vegans.
3. stewardship: Being responsible when it comes to the earth (picking up someone else's trash.)
4. biomimicry: Biomimicry is Imitating Life.
5. ecological footprint: An ecological footprint is the footprint we leave on society, formed from our use of fuels/the earth's natural resources etc.
6. overshoot (as it relates to supply and demand): Overshoot is the gap between supply an demand.

B. What does this equation mean? supply & demand
area x bioproductivity = biocapacity [SUPPLY]
population x consumption per person x footprint intensity = ecological footprint

C. What is the significance of the year 1987?
The first year that the demand was larger than the supply.

D. What happened on October 6, 2007?
We used up our resources for 2007.

The Birch Aquarium

The Birch Aquarium

The Birch Aquarium is a great place...
Learn about Fish, sea animals, and even Global Warming.
I looked at the exhibit, and it made me aware.
The facts they had made me stop and stare.
